Session Overview:
During this educational session by Dr Srino Bharam, MD, participants will understand the current concepts for evaluation and management of adductor related groin pain in high performance athletes. A comprehensive review of groin anatomy and correlation to injury
patterns, detailed groin examination and the role of diagnostic imaging will be highlighted in this lecture. The participants will also learn the indications for conservative and surgical management, dedicated rehabilitation protocols, and return to play criteria.
Learning Objectives:
MD, participants
Session Overview:
During preparatory phases of training, we have a much larger bandwidth for stress tolerance and qualities to address. However, during in-season, optimal neurological and physiological function must be funneled to the priorities of quality and efficient technical training and competition. While this is often agreed upon, how it is achieved is reasonably debated and argued. This session will offer perspective of prioritizing how best to support the above during in-season training choice.
World-wide in physical therapy and athletic performance
Session Overview:
In this virtual presentation, Dr Ben Cowin will discuss the science behind cannabis in sports. The topic of cannabis has been thrusted into the forefront of the athletic world of late with the ban on CBD being lifted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), CBD being taken off of the FDA’s regulatory list, and with multiple states decimalizing and legalizing cannabis for both medical and recreational use. As it continues to grow in popularity, so do the myths and ‘wives tales’ of what cannabis potentially can do. Dr Cowin will want to take a look at the literature and tell exactly what does science say about the plant, phytocannabinoids, and the therapeutic potential it may have for you and your athletes.
Learning Objectives:
Dr. Benjamin R. Cowin (DC, MS, ATC, CAFS)
National expert in high performance for competitive athletes and active executives
Session Overview:
This presentation will cover the practical nuances of implementing an effective off-season and in-season speed training program using both dry-land sprinting techniques and on-ice speed training. It will include an examination of basic locomotion mechanics and how sprinting relates to actual on-ice acceleration. Coaching cues and programming guidelines will be presented for all scenarios encountered throughout a typical year.
International Sport Performance Consultant
Session Overview:
This session will focus on the in-season management of shoulder instability and the role of non-surgical and surgical intervention in the contact athlete.
Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Epstein Family Center for Sports Medicine at Keck Medicine of USC
Session Overview:
Nutritional supplements are a multi-billion-dollar industry but where is the proof that any of them benefit health or performance? The majority of studies involving the relationship between supplements and athletic performance have been carried out utilizing an endurance-exercise model. Although, most team sports have an aerobic component, they are characterized by bursts of high-intensity activity requiring power, speed and quick decision-making. All athletes are looking for an “edge” and professionals working with athletes are charged with improving performance while keeping them safe.
Learning Objectives:
Linda Samuels, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN
Consultant Sports Dietitian in Chicago
Session Overview:
Nadja West – accomplished military leader, female trailblazer, mother, wife, medical professional, and more – shares her strategies and lessons-learned on achieving work-life balance. Using examples from her own experience defining and managing priorities for herself, her family, and her career, she demonstrates that to maintain balance, it is up to you to define the correct proportions – not someone else. That we must determine what is important and what we can live without, what we are willing to let go and what takes priority. Knowing that PHATS’ members have had a challenging year, we want to offer this session to help inspire and arm them with tips on how to have a successful and rewarding work and home life. Nadja’s background is inspiring as the first African American Army Surgeon General, and we know her trailblazing efforts will be inspirational to the group.

This session by Dr Shirley Blanc is intended to broaden what it means to use vision in the game of hockey, in addition to simply seeing clearly. The influence of visual processing on motor responses will be discussed, as well as evidence-based information about specific visual skills that are essential for optimum performance in all positions. Considerations for training and vision enhancement will be outlined, including equipment that can help develop a successful vision training program, as well as resources to collaborate with a sports vision trained Optometrist.
Learning Objectives:
Dr. Shirley Blanc, HBSc, OD, FNORA

Session Overview:
In this session, Pr Morin will present the concepts of sprint acceleration mechanics and individual force-velocity-power profiling specifically applied to ice-hockey. The assessment of force output magnitude and orientation during on-ice acceleration tests will be described through the use of field methods validated in the ice-hockey context in recently published research. The key variables of interest will be discussed in relation to performance, monitoring and individualized training orientation. Finally, a very recently published « in-situ » approach will be described, in which key variables are determined from specific ice-hockey position-time data collected during training or game. Testing the players without testing.
